How It Works
Short answer: Bracehorn is used sitting down. You put the toe into the shoe, hold the tongue clear, set the brace against the back of the heel where the Bracehorn is seated, then bring your weight down and let the brace slide into place. You are not pulling on the shoe or forcing anything — the horn holds the path open and your own body weight carries the brace in. Most people get it on the first or second try, and it becomes automatic within a few days.

The four steps
1. Sit down
The technique is designed to be performed seated. Working from a chair or the edge of a bed gives you a stable position, keeps both hands free, and means you are not fighting your own balance while you work. Standing is harder and unnecessary.
2. Toe in, tongue clear
Put the toe of your foot into the shoe and hold the tongue or flap out of the way. Getting the tongue clear first matters more than it sounds — if it folds down into the shoe, it narrows the opening exactly where the brace needs to travel.
3. Set the brace against the back of the heel
Position the Bracehorn so it sits between the back of the shoe and the brace. The concave channel cradles the brace and the heel counter together, holding both in line. This is the step the Bracehorn exists for: a narrow shoehorn will slip off the brace here, but the wider surface holds it.
4. Bring your weight down
Press down and let the brace slide down the guide into the shoe. You are not pulling upward on the shoe and you are not forcing the foot. The horn keeps the path open and gravity does the work. Once the brace is seated, slide the Bracehorn out.
Why it works when a regular shoehorn doesn't
A standard shoehorn is narrow. A brace is far bulkier than a bare foot, so a thin shoehorn slides off it and will not hold an angle while you are trying to work. You end up guessing at the approach and making several attempts, all while pressing down on a shoe that is collapsing under the brace.
Bracehorn changes three things. It is wider, so a bulky brace has a surface broad enough to control. It is concave, so the brace and the heel counter stay in line rather than wandering. And it is set at a working angle for a seated user, so the foot comes into it naturally. Length and angle were the two dimensions that took the most development — too long and the horn catches the back of the calf, too steep and the foot will not slide properly.
What to expect the first time
It will scuff on the inside — that is by design
The inner surface of the Bracehorn is meant to take scratches. Something has to give when a brace slides across a surface under load, and it should be the tool rather than the brace you rely on every day. Marks inside the horn mean it is doing its job. It is not a defect and it does not affect how the Bracehorn performs.
Boots take a little more pressure
Boots are the hardest footwear for a brace wearer, because a brace removes dorsiflexion — you cannot point the toe up and down, and that is the motion normally used to work a foot into a tall shoe. Bracehorn is built for exactly that situation, but expect to commit a bit more weight than you would with a low shoe.
Slip-ons still will not work
This is worth knowing before you try. Slip-on shoes generally do not work with braces at all, regardless of what tool you use. A brace wearer needs footwear that opens up and can then be fastened down.
Caring for it
Wipe clean. The Bracehorn is made from a firm, smooth, heavy-duty plastic — chosen deliberately over metal, which is heavier and harder to handle and position. Interior scuffing is expected and requires no attention.
